    Retro Blobber Games!

In celebration of 1 whole year of FreeRoamBlobber.com our team has compiled even more Free Roam Blobber titles for our official game directory!

The 6 titles below have just been added to our archive and we are actively searching for more blobber-goodness to include in our humble abode.

This round we have decided to add some old school blobbers that take a bit of work to get running, but none the less worth checking out.

If you want even more make sure to check out our Game Directory for even more old school blobbers!

    The Dungeon (1993)

The Dungeon is one of the earliest Free Roam Blobber style computer games and also the hardest for us to get up and running as it requires a vintage operating system called Acorn Archimedes (or in our case – an emulator) and requires some minor upgrades to play on modern computers.

We are working on a how-to guide with some quick start downloads to get this running so please make sure to subscribe to our newsletter for more information on that in the future!

Hexx: Heresy of the Wizard (1994)

As far as 90’s first-person RPGs go, Hexx: Heresy of the Wizard has all of the traditional aspects one would expect. Dungeons, monsters, evil wizards, and playable warriors on an epic quest in all their pixel-y goodness.

This game happens to be one of the earliest free roam blobber games we can find, currently only available through MyAbandonedWare.com. Our team was able to get it to run on DosBox and, although the game has some rough edges as would be expected by it’s age, the game is an entertaining and exciting blobber title for retro game fans.

    Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft Series (1994 & 1995)

There is something particularly charming about an official Dungeons & Dragons title made for DOS. Or in this case, two titles!

While not the first D&D game released for computer gamers, Ravenloft: Strahd’s Possession is memorable for being very well received in the 1990’s. The game was even nominated for Computer Gaming World‘s Role-Playing Game of the Year award in May 1995.

Strahd’s Possession was so popular that the sequel, Stone Prophet, was released in 1994 to both critical and fan acclaim.

Considered two legendary RPG titles of the 90’s, a combo version including both games was released via GoG and Steam in 2022 as a single game for modern operating systems. The Ravenloft Series includes 2 games Ravenloft: Strahd’s Possession and Ravenloft: Stone Prophet. (We are including this as a single entry because it’s most easily accessible that way.)

Of all of the games included in this batch of updates to the Free Roam Blobber directory, this combo is the most accessible and easiest to get up and running. We highly recommend giving it a play through!

    Rol Crusaders (1995)

Rol Crusaders is another early free roam blobber style game released in 1995 for MS DOS.

There are currently 2 versions on MyAbandonedWare.com, both a Shareware English and a Spanish full version that requires some work to setup.

The full Spanish language version has an annoying protection you have to input when you go to play the game, but the manual is available to easily bypass this screen.

If you are using DosBox you will have to change CPU speed a bit to get the game speed to feel good.

We are working on guide and some quick start downloads to get this one up and running as well as looking for the full English version. Stay tuned!

Whale’s Voyage II: Die Übermacht (1995)

Whale’s Voyage II is an interesting entry into our Free Roam Blobber game directory as the first fully Sci-Fi genre game we have come across. It is not, as the name may imply, a game about whales in the ocean but instead an adventure based on a spaceship named “Whale” and its intergalactic space expeditions.

Technically a sequel to the 1993 Whale’s Voyage game created by Austrian development company Neo Software, Whale’s Voyage II has gained a bit of a cult following as a game only released in German language and subsequently translated into English as a fan version.

Whale’s Voyage II is available on MyAbandonware.com as either the original German version or the English fan translation. It may require some effort to get running correctly, but for video game history-nerds is well worth the effort!

    Gods: Lands of Infinity (2007)

On the more modern end of the Blobber spectrum, Gods: Lands of Infinity is a slightly more recent release (although still coming up on it’s 20 year anniversary!)

Gods: Land of Infinity is a fantasy style game that features turn based tactical combat and traditional quest-based story line. Something interesting about this title compared to other early 2000’s video games of the era is the choice to feature a female protagonist named Vivien – who has been tasked by the deities of the realm to find a way to defeat the evil God of Darkness.

Might and Magic fans may also recognize Gods: Land Of Infinity as slightly similar to Might and Magic 8, where players start the game with one main character and then have the option to recruit new members to the party. We would also venture to say that this game seems to pull many “inspirations” from the Might and Magic series, although perhaps without the same level of finesse and polish.

This game is a bit tricky to play as of the time of writing there are no official means of getting a digital version. However, a quick google search will reveal results if you want to give this a go! There is a GOG dream list you can upvote here: https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/game/gods-lands-of-infinity-special-edition
