Open Source Might and Magic Projects 2024

Want to develop your own game inspired by Might and Magic? Or maybe help contribute to the open source community?

You can always start from scratch, but there are currently several promising open source projects that could get started with.

Below is a list of some of our current favorite fan projects with information about how indie developers can potentially get involved!

    1. Open Enroth

    Project Link: https://github.com/OpenEnroth/OpenEnroth

This is a complete remake of the Might and Magic game engine in C++ that can run on modern hardware including Linux and Mac. It might not be super beginner friendly, but it’s well documented and includes some getting started guides. Currently only MM7 is playable, but they plan on doing 6 and 8.

One particular benefit of this project is that the development community and Discord are still very active as of the writing of this article.

    2. OpenMM8

    Project Link: https://github.com/pjasicek/OpenMM8

OpenMM8 is a remake of Might and Magic 8 in the Unity Engine. The developer claims it was roughly based on porting the OpenEnroth code.

Currently this game only features the map of Dagger Wound Island and in addition to gameplay features.

This project is unfinished and the original developer has not made an update in a few years, but the bones are there and it makes a great jumping off point if you want to develop your own Might and Magic style game in Unity or even fork the repo it and continue its work!

    3. New New Sorpigal

    Project Link 1:https://hapro.itch.io/newnewsorpigal

    Project Link 2: https://gitlab.com/hapro/nns

New New Sorpigal is a small prototype built in Unreal Engine that was recently open sourced. It may not be the best example as the developer Hapro claims: “I did a lot of things quite poorly at the time.”

This project is a bit older and may take some work to get up and running, but definitely a fun example if nothing else.

You can even play the entire demo on Itch!

    4. Call Of Liriel MM7 Repo

We came across this interesting project while researching the abandoned game Call Of Liriel.

The developer has a few git repo’s with some unfinished Might and Magic and Wizardry projects built in the Unity engine. There is not a lot here and there has not been any updates from the original developer since 2020.

It’s easy to get it up and running and poke around in if you are curious. Our team has reached out to the developer of these projects for an update, but have not yet received a response.

Are there other open source blobbers out there? Are you working on a game like Might and Magic? An open source project you want to share with the world? We are looking at making FreeRoamBlobber.com a resource for developers so Please let us know!
