    In Development: Embers of the Gods

    Embers of the Gods by GameDevRick is a new free roam blobber game currently being developed in Unity with a demo that you can currently play on itch.

    “Embers” tells a story about a cyclic period in time when the gods are replaced or ‘renewed’ and the god of nature going rogue announces and brings about this time of change.

    The demo starts you in a small well detailed town and you are able to collect a quest, talk to people, buy skills, and explore. You can also engage in combat in the arena where you can place a wager on your success in battle. Although the demo is short and there are still placeholders in some areas you can see there are many promising features present in the game to build upon.

    The most recent public update for the game is from September 2019, but we were able to get in contact with the developer to get more information. Our interview is below.

    Q: What is the name and general overview of your game?

    GameDevRick: ‘”Embers of the Gods” is a throwback to old school western style role play gaming in which players develop a party of adventurers though exploring, combat, questing, and leveling up. “Embers” tells a story about a cyclic period in time when the gods are replaced or ‘renewed’ and the god of nature going rogue announces and brings about this time of change”

    Q: Any big inspirations for the game?

    GameDevRick: Might and Magic 6 through 8 and Wizardry 8

    Q: Any personal anecdotes you would like to share about the game?

    GameDevRick: “While playing them, I always thought that cloning them was within my reach and that I would most likely level up the experience for the player. I feel a great sense of satisfaction while playing through the prototype knowing that the game is promising and development is within my abilities.”

    Q: Type of combat? turn based, real time, strategy?

    GameDevRick: “Combat takes place in both Real-time and Turn-based with the player deciding which to apply.”

    Q: Any other mechanics you are excited about / unique in your game?

    GameDevRick: “Free roaming with the player in control empowers them to discover the world at their own pace.

    Party members can be dismissed and re-hired which gives the player limitless options for party builds.

    The gods influence what the player experiences with “Boons” or “Burdens”. When the player’s actions please any one of the gods, they will receive a boon from that god. Conversely, actions that displease a god can impose burdens.

    The player can fly and teleport.”

    Q: How big is your development team? Any details or shout outs you would like to give?

    GameDevRick: “Because it is not funded yet, the dev team is tentative. When funding becomes available, I will assemble a good team. Shout out to Mark Roller for his inspirations and level design contributions.”

    Q: Any ETA on next big release / demo?

    GameDevRick: “There is no timeline until the project is funded.”

    Now for some disappointing news, we asked GameDevRick if this game is still in active development and he said unfortunately development is paused due to lack of support and interest. He said he may start again at some point in the future.
