Abandoned Games: World Of Xeen 2 (WOX2)

World of Xeen 2 (working title) was a fan-developed PC game that has since been abandoned. Set to take place in the world of Erathia and Enroth on the remote island of Vori, the developer claimed that they had completed 7 open locations, 5 dungeons, several quests and more. The demo featured realtime combat, but the developer mentioned turn-based was planned.

Development was started in 2009 and paused, but then picked up again in 2010. Sadly the game has since been abandoned.

There are still a few screenshots and videos you can find online, but thankfully the demo is still available!

As of this writing, the last Celestial Heaven forum post related to this fan-game was published in 2013. The post received numerous comments about how excited and hopeful people were for the project.

The developer’s website http://wox2.org can only be viewed by the wayback machine. The archive contains snapshots from their official forum, which is unfortunately a bit sparse.

The latest information I could find about the project was a video from the developer posted in 2016. They seem very distraught with only getting a small amount of downloads.

It was a fun time, we were doing a difficult but interesting project.

Many technologies were studies in the fields of graphics, sound, animation.

We released the demo to the public and guess what?

    The game had 105 downloads.

With how big today’s indie scene is I think this game with proper marketing could have seen a lot more downloads and possibly even a release. I reached out to the developer to see if the game will ever be finished or even made open source.

If you are interested you can still check out the demo. It’s a really well put together and the engine they built runs on newer hardware without issue. It’s only available in Russian, but is definitely a fun time to try out. There is still a ton of information and a demo available on the thread Celestial Heavens thread!
